The Smoking Scourge

Recently, I came across this advertisement on you tube.

Quit Victoria is dedicated to eliminating the pain, illness and suffering caused by tobacco.

The current campaign titled ‘Everybody Knows’ produced by the Cancer Institute NSW, presents a series of memorable scenes from existing campaigns. It shows the range of health consequences caused by smoking, and reinforces that smoking will lead to one of these diseases.

Importantly the television commercial recognizes that smokers know the health consequences of smoking but they still smoke, highlighting the fact that quitting smoking can be hard and that smokers may need help to break their habit once and for all.

The ‘Everybody Knows’ advertisement will air in metropolitan and regional Victoria in conjunction with the ‘Bronchoscopy’ advertisement from January 18 - February 14.

This is yet another campaign to scare smokers into quitting. It gives smokers a preview of the effects of long-term smoking on their physical appearance and a chance to look into their future.
I perceive that this advertisement can be very astounding to a person. It could play into their vanity a little bit once they realize what smoking has an effect on besides the usual things like cancer and lung diseases.I think this campaign could be categorized into the selecting process of perception.

"Perception is the process of selecting, organizing and interpreting information in order to give personal meaning to the communication we receive."
- Seiler and Beall

Hence, selection is a critical aspect of perception which in turn influences our communication and behavior. This campaign showcases the qualities of selection such as intensity, novel stimuli and contrast. It includes a man who breathes through a hole in his throat, a woman who is missing four fingers because of smoking, and operations to remove fatty deposits from the brain and amputate a gangrenous foot.Other campaigns have matchbooks that carry various grisly images with the stark words, “Cigarettes Are Eating You Alive.” The “Gum Disease” version shows decayed teeth, yellowed and blackened. Other matchbooks show large, painful tumors and smoke-ravaged lungs. The images that are shown are vehement in nature and that of an extreme degree which attracts the viewers attention. It illustrates the hazards of smoking with a goal to effective communication i. e to reduce the number of smokers worldwide.

Dr. Susan D. Karabin, the immediate past president of the American Academy of Periodontology, said in a phone interview:

"I applaud the health department for doing this. These images are accurate: Smoking interferes with healing, with the immune system, and if you have periodontal disease — a chronic, low-grade infection — it exacerbates it, and makes the body less able to deal with that infection. Smoking is also considered an independent risk factor for bone loss. Smokers lose more teeth and have worse periodontal disease than nonsmokers."

Dr. Karabin, who has a private practice on the Upper East Side and is not involved in the city’s ad campaign, added, “Unfortunately, I think it does take scare tactics to get people to stop smoking.”

  1. Such a brillant article. I totally love it. Hats off to the writer. Well i agree with the scare tactics employed by the Cancer Institute NSW. I believe that smokers wont ever understand that smoking is bad not only for them but also for their surrounding. Scare tactics should be used.
I really rate this article a 5 star for spreading this awareness.

  2. It is very sad to see that even though people know the harmful effects of smoking, they find it hard to quit it.The campaigners are trying out everything possible but unless the individual doesn't have the will power to quit smoking, the purpose won't be served.

  3. Firstly, ewwwwww!!!!

That was ummm...something that's not gonna give me very pleasant dreams tonight....

Even though people can read and see for themselves the hazards of smoking WHY DON'T THEY STOP???

I guess nicotine and tobacco are stronger than "will power" after all...

  4. Thanks for the comments guys!

Its true, even though smokers know all about the hazards of smoking they still dont quit. I guess one of the main reason is that they probably think that stuff like that would not happen to them! But ultimately in the long run their the ones who suffer....

haha 'Deja-vu' I'm sorry for that! I should have put a warning sign up there. xD
But that was the soul purpose of this entry. What I learnt in my COMS101 class, it shows the 'intensity' of the ill effects of smoking.
I wouldn't have been able to stress on my point if not for the video! :))

  5. I dont think people have the perception of " it will not happen to them". Nicotine plays the major role of hindering people to quit smoking. Some people might think that it easy to quit smoking. But the truth is, nicotine is more addictive than what you think.

  6. ok the video was disgusting! lol and yes you should put a warning sign up there! HAHA
Great step taken there by the campaigners. Unless these tactics are used smokers are never gonna sit back and ponder over what harm they are actually causing themselves..Smoking interfers with healing, its sad to see that the number of smokers around the world are not deminishing but increasing on the other hand. Even though pictures and videos like these are put up for their view. I guess one should not underestimate the power of nicotine! Good article Cynera, nice way of spreading the awareness !

  7. fs29 - Well yes your right but when I said "it will not happen to them" I was referring to the ill effects that were shown in the clip above and not about the addiction !

  8. Carl- Thanks alot ! I liked what you said ! :)
and HAHA I'm sorry about that ! but like I said again that was the soul purpose of this entry. It shows the 'intensity' of the ill effects of smoking, I wouldn't have been able to stress on my point if not for the video! :))

  9. Well I personally do not think scare tactics or any implementations for that matter, work. Smokers actually are very aware of the consequences and the grotesque nature of it. Other than the high tariffs imposed, Singapore tried by printing abhorrent and revolting images on the cigarette pack cover, and again by restricting smoking space. None worked to much effect.

  10. Yes! That's a fact. I remember asking my friend how is it that he is still able to smoke after looking at those horrendous images on the pack itself. He simply replied saying, "you don't look at it!" lol :P

  11. This was a really great post! I recently saw a similar anti-smoking commercial on TV, and I was horrified! They definitely do a great job of showing the harsh consequences of smoking. After watching them, I realized how good it felt to be a non-smoker.

  12. If there is a thing that I am sure, I will never do in my life it must be smoking. Smoking is one of the worst things kids or adults can do to their bodies.

I can not stand people that smoke mostly, not because they distress their own body but beacause they also harm other people that do not smoke. Any person exposed to passive smoking may experience short-term symptoms.

  13. From a smokers perspective...these adds really don't affect you! Once your addicted to nicotine and tobacco there's no turning back basically! Once your hooked, your hooked. Trust me..I guess the saying "Quitting is easy, I've tried it a million time before" justifies what I just said.. You need a lot of help, support from family and friends and dedication to wear of all the addiction.

  14. A very informative article, and enlightens many people in the side effects of smoking. Yes nicotine is addictive, however I feel willpower is stronger than that. A person with a good willpower can turn back and quit smoking
